Listed Timber Barn Conversion
East Suffolk
This project involved converting a traditional, listed timber-framed barn in East Suffolk into a spacious four-bedroom family home set within a generous three-quarter-acre plot. Designed by architect Richard Bennett, the scheme carefully preserves the historic structure while introducing contemporary finishes and landscaping.
At the centre of the design is an impressive triple-height galleried atrium, revealing the scale and craftsmanship of the original timber frame. Exposed beams and structural elements remain a defining feature of the interior, celebrating the building’s agricultural heritage while providing a dramatic architectural focal point.
The living spaces combine the character of the historic structure with modern materials and finishes, creating a home suited to contemporary family living. Large openings frame panoramic views across the surrounding countryside and towards the nearby village church.
The first phase of the wider scheme — a brick barn conversion — was completed in 2016. The project forms part of a sensitive redevelopment of historic agricultural buildings, bringing new life to traditional rural structures while maintaining their architectural character and setting.
