Luxury Listed Barn Conversion
Fressingfield, Suffolk
This luxury barn conversion in Fressingfield transformed a listed agricultural building into a contemporary family home while carefully preserving its rural character. Designed by architect Patrick Allen, the project combines traditional barn architecture with modern materials, open-plan living and advanced sustainable technology.
The building retains the familiar form of a Suffolk barn, with black weatherboard cladding and red clay pantile roofs sitting comfortably within the surrounding countryside. A large glazed gable introduces natural light into the interior and creates strong visual connections with the landscape.
Inside, the design centres around a dramatic double-height living space that celebrates the scale of the original structure. Exposed timber posts and beams have been carefully retained and incorporated into the new layout, creating a strong dialogue between historic fabric and contemporary detailing.
A bespoke kitchen by Ashford and Brooks forms the focal point of the open-plan living area, complemented by feature staircases and high-quality finishes throughout.
The conversion integrates a range of renewable technologies to ensure the building performs efficiently while maintaining year-round comfort. These include a ground-source heat pump, photovoltaic solar panels, and a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system.
The project was featured in Real Homes (November 2015) and Homebuilding & Renovating (April 2016), recognising the quality of the design and craftsmanship throughout the conversion.
