The Grain Store
Wickham Market, Suffolk
The Grain Store is a thoughtful conversion of a former agricultural building into a contemporary rural home, delivered through a collaboration between architect Andrew Hughes and Avoncrown. The project retains the simple form and material character of the original structure while introducing modern architectural detailing and a highly efficient building specification.
Externally, traditional brick elevations and clay tiled roofs maintain the building’s agricultural identity, while powder-coated steel windows and doors add a crisp, contemporary contrast. Large glazed openings frame views across the surrounding Suffolk landscape and connect the house to a series of terraces and outdoor spaces.
Internally, the design centres around a large open-plan living space. Polished concrete floors, exposed brickwork and a bespoke steel staircase reference the building’s industrial origins, while high ceilings and rooflights introduce generous natural light. The kitchen, dining and living areas are arranged as a continuous space designed for both everyday living and entertaining.
Sustainability was integral to the project, with heating provided by a ground-source heat pump system supported by three boreholes, alongside a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system. The result is a modern countryside home that balances the robust character of its agricultural past with contemporary comfort and performance.
